What is Third Generation Storage?

Third generation storage has many definitions, but it always includes these four main characteristics:

  1. Flexible, future-proof architecture. Storage systems created today should be compatible with tomorrow’s storage densities and be easily scalable. This means systems must work with changing drive sizes, densities, and configurations over time.
  2. Non-controller based. Third generation storage systems are data-aware in a clustered environment that scales quickly and without complexity. Controller-based architectures are expensive and time-consuming to scale and manage.
  3. Content aware. As technologies become more intelligent, third generation storage will do more than simply hold data.
